Making key chains can be a fun and creative DIY project! Here's a step-by-step guide, depending on the type of key chain you're making:
1. Beaded Key Chain
Materials:
Key Ring
String, wire or thread
Beads (glass, plastic or wood)
Scissors
Steps:
Cut a piece of string or wire about 6-8 inches long.
Wrap it around the key ring and tie a knot to secure it.
Thread the beads onto the thread in the pattern you want.
Tie a firm knot at the end to secure the beads in place.
Trim the excess string and enjoy your new key chain!
2. Resin Key Chain
Materials:
Silicone mold
Epoxy resin
Glitter, dried flowers or ornaments
Key ring with small chain
Drill bit (optional)
Steps:
Mix the resin according to directions.
Place glitter, flowers or other embellishments in the mold.
Pour resin into mold and allow to cure (usually 24-48 hours).
Once hardened, carefully remove the part from the mold.
Drill a small hole and attach the key ring using a jump ring.
3. Leather Keychain
Materials:
Strip of leather
Key ring
Hole punch or awl
Rivet or strong glue
Scissors
Steps:
Cut a strip of leather (about 4-6 inches long and ½ inch wide).
Punch a hole near one end and insert the key ring.
Fold the strip of leather over the key ring and secure with a rivet or glue.
If using glue, allow it to dry.
(Optional) Sand the edges for a polished finish.
4. Fabric Key Chain (Wristband)
Materials:
Fabric (cotton or canvas)
Key Ring and Clasp
Sewing Machine or Fabric Glue
Steps:
Cut a strip of fabric approximately 12 inches long and 2 inches wide.
Fold in half lengthwise and sew along the edge.
Thread it through the key ring and secure the ends with a strong stitch or glue.
(Optional) Add embellishments such as embroidery or patches.
5. Umbrella Cord Key Chain (sturdy and durable)
Materials needed:
Umbrella Cord (approx. 3-4 feet)
Key Ring or Mountaineering Fob
Scissors
Lighter (to seal ends)
Steps:
Cut Umbrella Cord
Measure and cut approx. 3-4 feet of umbrella cord.
Measure and cut about 3-4 feet of cord. Fold in half to find the center section.
Tie it to the key ring, pass the cord through the key ring, and thread the ends through the center loop (called a lark's head knot).
Pull tight.
Begin weaving the cobra
Take the left cord and cross it through the center.
Take the right cord and place it over the left cord and cross the left loop from behind the center.
Pull tight.
Repeat the same process, alternating sides, until the desired length is reached.
To complete the key chain
Cut off the excess parachute cord.
Use a lighter to carefully melt the ends so they don't fray.
Use a flat surface (such as a spoon) to press the melted ends onto the umbrella cord.
Your umbrella cord key chain is ready to go! It is sturdy and durable and perfect for outdoor use.
6. Photo keychain (personalized and meaningful)
Materials needed:
small printed photo
clear resin or laminate
keychain and small jump ring
hole punch
scissors
Steps:
select and print photo
Select a small photo (about 1“ x 2”).
Print it on glossy photo paper for added durability.
Laminate or resin-coated photos
If using laminate, place the photo inside and cut along its perimeter, leaving a small border.
If using resin, mix it according to the directions, pour it over the photo, and let it cure for 24-48 hours.
Punching
Use a hole punch to punch a small hole in the top of a laminated or resin-covered photo.
Attach the key fob
Insert the jump ring into the hole and attach it to the key fob.
Now you have a customized photo keychain - perfect for a gift or keepsake!
