How to Clean a Fingerboard
Share
Learning how to clean a fingerboard is essential if you want your setup to roll faster, pop higher, and last for years. Over time, dust, skin oils, lint, and desk debris build up on your board, clogging small ball bearings and ruining your deck's aesthetic.
Whether you shred a budget wooden setup or a high-end custom complete, taking time to clean a fingerboard restores smooth performance and keeps your gear looking brand new.
Why Regular Fingerboard Maintenance Matters
Dust and hair are the natural enemies of micro skate setups. When you neglect to clean a fingerboard, dirty components quickly degrade your riding experience:
● Sluggish Roll: Hair and lint wrap around axle pins, jamming tiny bearing shields and stopping wheels from spinning freely.
● Loss of Deck Pop: Accumulated finger oils penetrate unsealed wood or grip tape, reducing friction and board control.
● Corrosion & Rust: Dirt traps moisture near metal kingpins and screws, causing hardware to rust prematurely.

How to Clean Fingerboard Bearing Wheels
Freeing up jammed wheels is often the main reason riders need to clean a fingerboard. Follow this deep-cleaning process to get your CNC wheels spinning smoothly again.
1. Remove Wheels from Axles:Disassemble hardware safely. Use your mini skate tool to unscrew the micro locknuts. Slide each bearing wheel off the truck axle and place the locknuts in a small container so they don't roll away.
2. Remove Trapped Hair and Lint:Clear physical blockages. Inspect the core of each wheel. Use fine tweezers or a needle to gently unwind wrapped hair or carpet fibers from around the outer bearing race.
3. Soak in Isopropyl Alcohol:Dissolve internal grime. Place the wheels in a small glass dish containing high-percentage isopropyl alcohol. Swirl them around for 2 to 3 minutes to dissolve dried oils and dust inside the micro ball bearings.
4. Air Dry and Relubricate:Dry and reassemble. Set the wheels on a clean paper towel and let them dry completely. Add one tiny drop of speed cream or thin lubricant, then remount them onto your trucks.
How to Clean Maple Fingerboard Decks
High-grade maple wood requires gentle handling to prevent warping or lacquer damage.
1. Wipe Down Wood
PliesLightly dampen a microfiber cloth with warm water (or a mixture of mild soap and water). Gently wipe down the bottom graphic and top wood plies. Never submerge your wooden deck in water, as wood absorbs moisture easily and can warp or delaminate.
2. Polish Lacquer Finishes
If your maple deck features a glossy clear coat, use a dry microfiber cloth to buff out fingerprint smudges and restore a smooth shine.
How to Restore Foam Grip Tape
Foam grip tape collects dust and dead skin quickly, losing its sticky traction.
1. The Tape Trick: Press a strip of painter's tape or masking tape firmly onto your foam grip tape.
2. Peel Off Dirt: Slowly peel the tape back—the adhesive pulls out trapped dust without ripping the foam.
3. Avoid Liquid Cleaners: Never apply soap or alcohol directly to foam tape, as liquid weakens the adhesive bond holding it to the deck.
